MSH on Father's Day.

Mary has graciously agreed to move the 1st workshop to a week later from June 19th to

But I do believe the bus buddies had the wildest time. :-)

We revealed our new pattern line during the SSYC.
This beginning lace scarf pattern was made with lace handpaint by Punta Yarns.
Okay. So, we ran out of the yarn the 1st day but alas, we'll get more.

is written for a scarf or shawl.

The instore shawl pattern was displayed using Unique Sheep Gradiance.

Ever heard of
Knitted Knockers???

Seriously.
This is for real.
One of our wonderful patrons told me about a unique campaign that supports breast cancer survivors who have gone through a mastectomy.

And if it's "unique" you KNOW I'm all over that.

In 2007 The Knitting Experience Cafe in Brunswick, ME began knitting prosthetic breasts for women who could not afford expensive "replacements".

The idea worked and took off like a rocket
and has gone national.

The Yorkshire Yarns spring/summer charity knitting campaign will be in support of the
Knitted Knockers or (as we'll call ourselves)
"The Knitty Titty Committee".

We plan to donate our knockers to our local American Cancer Society and or send them to the KE Cafe.

We may as well get started sooner than later. Here's a link to the Knitty.com
"Tit Bits" pattern from sizes A to DD.

Remember, they must be made out of a soft, comfortable, breathable fiber because they will be next to scar tissue.
For example, Cascade's Pima Tencel would be a nice choice.

Thank you to all those who are already knitting caps! That's one of the things I love about the YY clientele. We're serious about helping others. :-)

The PPC campaign is a nationwide campaign to bring awareness to the
Shaken Baby Syndrome.

During the SSYC all participating shops will be collecting knitted hats. Let's make this BIG and knit/crochet as many purple hats for babies as possible.
After the crawl we'll deliver our hats to
Mary Bridge Hospital- Child Abuse Intervention Dept.

Okay, ladies!
Check in is any time after 2pm. Be sure to bring your receipt showing your pre-paid reservation.
You can choose a cabin and a bed then relax for the rest of the day.
Dinner will be served at 7pm on Friday to accomodate late-comers.

Breakfast will be served at 9am on Saturday & Sunday.
Chow time is 6pm for Saturday's dinner.

We just received a very large shipment of
Mountain colors Twizzle.
Notice the white thread going through the hank? What you seeing is the silk content of Twizzle next to 85% merino. During the dying process the colors don't saturate as deeply as they do with the other fiber. Pretty cool, eh?
Anyhoo, we received 12 colors to DIE for.

HELP CLINICS
Yorkshire Yarns is beginning to get a bit busy as fall approaches. Yes. That's a good thing. :-)
As we see our visitors increase for a little hands on help, we'll need to go back to regularly scheduled help clinics.
Beginning this month we invite anyone/everyone to come in for help on Monday's from 6-8pm. We'll have plenty of staff on hand to answer all your knitting/crochet questions for FREE.
So if you've got a quick question bring it!

*Private (scheduled) instruction is always available as well for a small fee.

Okay. I've got something to tell you. I've been keeping a secret for quite some time now.
Have you heard of that big ole bike ride from Seattle to Portland (STP) involving 10 thousand riders and a whole lot of pain?
Well, I and my entire family are going to do it on
July 17th & 18th.
I know. I'm nuts. But it wasn't really my idea.
I was just making conversation one day.
The next thing I know Glen paid the entry fee. I was stuck.

When life gives you lemons ...well, you know the rest.

This is where you come in.
There's a big 'ol "Finish Line Festival" in Portland! If I'm still alive by then be there with your needles & hooks in hand!
Let's try and meet up with some of our buddies from the Portland area.

Finally, we're looking to collect donations for the Pediatric Interim Care Center. PICC is a program that provides specialized, 24-hour care for drug-exposed & medically fragile newborns. They have a wish list on line so you can see what they need. If you can possibly help out please bring your items to Yorkshire Yarns until July 18th.
To commemorate our successful bike ride to Portland the whole fam-damily will also ride to the PICC in Kent to deliver your donations.

By the way. We're riding a tandem. I plan to put my feet up quite a bit while my pilot flies the plane.

And a good time was had by all!

Thank you to all who participated in the South Sound Yarn Crawl this past weekend.
What a BLAST!
The weather was perfect.
Moods were up...WAY up. New friendships were made & old ones rekindled.
And yarn discoveries were plentiful.

All finishers will be contacted when the commemorative 2010 notions bags arrive. You'll be able to pick those up in any of the participating shops.
The grand prize and second chance winners names will be drawn next week at the Yarn Garden in Gig Harbor.

All of the participating shops look forward to hosting another crawl next year. As always, we want to improve on an already fun-filled weekend.
So we welcome your comments, suggestions and (of course) your compliments.

Yorkshire Yarns Retreat -March 26-28th

Overnight cost is $115
Daytripper cost is $25
**Overnighters bring your own bedding. (sleeping bag, pillow).
Everyone bring a snack or two to share...or not. :-)
We'll have the tea and coffee pots on 24/7.

We've got the facility aaaaaaall day on Friday & Sunday.
So!
We can arrive any time on the 26th and leave whenever we want on Sunday.
***NOTE: Dinner will be served at 6:30pm Friday night. I'll keep plates for those who arrive later.

Our lodge is the Westwood Retreat Centre. We have a big o' kitchen, large meeting/dining area, sleeping accomodations and WI-FI.
We'll be staying in our own lodge away from other guests on the grounds.
All our meals will be served there as well.

"The Gwinwood Retreat Facility is a 29 acre retreat hidden within the urbanized area of Lacey, Washington, near Olympia. It is located on Hicks Lake. The property includes 650 feet of developed waterfront and over 700 feet of natural waterfront, including significant shoreline along the Hicks Lake wetland. The park-like setting includes about 18 acres of forested land with first-generation, second-growth timber, 4 acres of open meadow lands and 7 acres of undisturbed wetlands."

You can do that too. Or you can take a canoe ride while I stand on the shoreline and wave.

On March 26-28 our retreat will be held at the Gwinwood Christian Retreat Center in Lacey.

There are only 40 spots available. The cost is $115.00. Or if you'd like a daily pass instead the fee is only $25.
Your overnight reservation includes dinner on Friday, breakfast & dinner on Saturday and then breakfast on Sunday morning. After that the weekend slumber party is over and we aaaaaall head back to reality. :-)

Each room houses 4 people so get your buddies together and come have some fun!

Plan for a festive, relaxing atmosphere while we lounge in comfortable surroundings. Saturday we plan to hit a couple yarn shops in the area and maybe even the outlet mall down the road. Just be open to just about anything and bring your projects and a good attitude and I'll guarantee you'll have a GREAT time.

The good news is Mary will be teaching at Yorkshire Yarns on January 30th & 31st!

There will be a meet & greet reception on Saturday from 3-4pm. Classes w/Mary will begin at 4pm on Saturday & Sunday at 12:30.

Classes include Norwegian Selbu Knitting and the scary art of steeking ("Eeek! Steeks!) on Saturday the 30th & Sunday the 31st, respectively.

50 is fabulous!

Thank you to all of you who came to celebrate my 50th in a wonderful way. We took about 30-35 blankets to the homeless shelter. They even shared some birthday cake with me after 10 of the residents serenaded me with "Happy Birthday". I will never forget what a great day we had. :-)

Cascade Yarns/Figheadh Trunk Shows This Weekend

Yep! From 11-3pm we'll have Cliff in our store. (Our friendly, stunningly handsome local Cascade Yarns rep.) He'll be there to show you some of the new fibers and colors from Cascade yarns.
Cliff will be there to answer questions and take special orders in any fiber you desire from this wonderful company.

Jennifer Hagan of Figheadh Designs will be there also to display and discuss her new designs.
And most of them happen to be Cascade Yarns friendly. hmmm...imagine that. :-) Jennifer's newly designed trunk show is a must see!

We'll keep the excitement and momentum going with our 1st ever Figheadh Fashion Show this Monday, September 19th from 6-8pm. Light snacks & beverages will be served during this special event.

It's back! The SheKnits Purse trunk show will be at Yorkshire Yarns until November 1st. SheKnits is popular and known for her mystery KAL's on Ravelry. (Her recent KAL had 427 members!)
Check out the versatile felted bag style of SK displayed at our front door.

Christmas Stocking Contest!

We're having a contest for the best AND ugliest knitted or crocheted Christmas Stocking.
Here's the deal.

1. All entries must be in by December 14th.
2. At least half the material in the stocking must have been purchased at Yorkshire Yarns. (proof of purchase required)
3. All entries must have been made beginning Oct. 14th, 2009.
4. There will be 2 catagories. We want the best AND ugliest. (The ugliest will be deliberate entries only. LOL)

Winners will be judged and announced December 18th during our Christmas/holiday party 6-8pm.

The Land's End FeelGood is asking volunteers to knit 25,000 hats to warm-up the homeless & displaced. Come in and get the free yarn to get started.
Yorkshire Yarns supports Breast Cancer Awareness in October with projects & gadgets. Each are pink (of course) and part of the proceeds are donated towards breast cancer research.

Sock of the Month Club meets once a month on the 3rd Monday from 6-8pm.

SOTM club is designed to encourage sock kniters to try new, different and challenging techniques.

This month Shirley is teaching how to make the lovely "Queen of Cups" sock from Knitty.

I could not figure out why we were so busy yesterday and it was such a beautiful day.
I got to work at about 9:30 and expected a fairly quiet day.
And then I stepped outside at about 2:30.

We now have Mini Mochi & Mochi Plus in stock!

Mini Mochi is a fingering yarn for socks, lace work, baby items, scarves, garments.

The content is 80% Superwash Merino wool and 20% Nylon - it is Very Soft, single ply and in rich changing colors.

Mochi Plus is the bigger (aran wt) cousin to Mini Mochi, the fingering weight original.

The same soft hand (80% machine washable Merino + 20% nylon) and the same 16 color range.

Cat Bordhi July 10th-12th. (That's a week from Friday!) Special hours for shopping Friday & Saturday.

Yorkshire Yarns will open for the public to shop from NOON-1PM and 5-6pm on Friday & Saturday, July 10th & 11th. AND WE WILL BE CLOSED THE REST OF THE TIME DURING THE WORKSHOPS.

The following are the class materials will be available for purchase. Yorkshire Yarns will open early at 9am Friday & Saturday FOR STUDENTS ONLY. Workshops will go from 10am-5pm with a one-hour lunch.

Here's a heads-up for class materials.

Sock Workshops July 10th & 11th:

Lorna's Laces has designed a yarn specifically for Cat's instruction. The yarn changes colors as the knitter reaches a new technique in the sock anatomy. Cat's yarn will be available for purchase for each of her classes. Students will need a size 8/24" circular needle or size 8 double points. Cat will be teaching her techniques from her book, "New Pathways for Sock Knitters".

Mobieus Workshop, Sunday, July 12th:

Cat will be teaching from her books, "Treasury of Magical Knitting" & "A Second Treasury of Magical Knitting". Either book will work for the workshop. You'll need a needle appropriate to the project you select to do from one of the books. The needles need to be 47" long.

Are we as clear as mud? If you have any questions please call the shop at 253-589-9276. We'll clear up the muddy waters for ya. ***There will be no refunds given for cancellations after July 1st.

Tacoma Rainiers Stitch & Pitch tickets are available at the shop for $29. Kristeen Griffin-Grimes (French Girl Knits) will be throwing out the 1st pitch and she'll be in our booth for a book signing. And guess who's singing the National Anthem. Moi! :-)

1st of all....

We're back in business! Thank you to all of you who turned out for our 1st & 2nd days. Wasn't that fun?

Your phone calls, email letters and face to face conversations have been very encouraging. Yep. That was a wild ride. I lost sleep. Threw temper tantrums. (That didn't do any good.) Paced a strip in our carpet at home. (That cost money.) Became a shut in. (I got hooked on Farm Town on Facebook.) Etc.

But! Here we are! And we're hearing great things about the new space. The most common is that the shop has the same welcoming feeling as the old place but with a whole lot more space. I affectionately call it "booty wiggle room".

I MUST give a special thank you to Terri Keller who put in a LOT of time & hard labor to have the shop set up in 2 fast days. Shirley Sommer has quite the muscles too. You see all that heavy furniture & fixtures? Those two "burly" women moved it all. Dang. They can knit AND kick if need be. Don't mess. :-)

Please note our shop hours are the same but we are now closed on Sunday except for special events.

As expected the Cat Borhdi classes filled up in a hurry. We have just a few spots left in the July 11th (socks) & 12th (moebius) classes. Cat agreed for us to add a third workshop on Friday, July 10th to accomodate the overwhelming response to Cat's sensational sock workshop. Believe it or not, the class is already half full. If you're interested please let me know ASAP and we'll get you in. So! Here are the details.

**Each workshop is from 10-6pm. The cost is $85 per class.

We have pleaty of restaurants around us including The Ram. If you'd like to bring a sack lunch no problem. We have a refrigerator to keep it all cool & crisp.

Class descriptions & supply lists:

Setting Out on New Pathways for Sock Knitting

After this workshop even new sock knitters will be ready to knit 
custom-fitted socks for any size foot. You’ll be knitting a little 
sock or two which will give you the understanding and skills needed 
to happily play with all 8 new kinds of sock architecture in New 
Pathways, and will learn many special tips and tricks.
Skill level: must be fluent knitting in the round with 1 circ, 2 
circs, or dpn's
Materials: Light-colored worsted weight wool yarn (if possible, 
choose Lorna’s Laces “Cat Bordhi Ahah!” yarn, which was designed 
expressly to make learning clear and easy) and suitable size needles 
(dpns’s, 2 circs or 1 long circular needle 40"). Also bring sock yarn and 
appropriate size needles to start a life-size sock, as well as the 
usual little bag of knitting supplies.

The Magic of Moebius Knitting
It takes only minutes to learn Cat’s unique Moebius Cast-On, and then 
you have the key to everything in the Treasuries. For your first 
project, you’ll knit a Moebius scarf - to become familiar with this 
magical, friendly form, which is the heart of every Moebius bag, 
bowl, boot, cape, wrap, and bed. You can use one or multiple strands, 
or change yarns and textures along the way, and will discover that 
everything you do forms a beautiful mirror reflection growing from 
the middle of the scarf out to the edges. We’ll talk about what 
happens if you introduce a diagonal stitch pattern, how to work with 
stripes, how to sequence lace repeats, learn several edge treatments, 
and explore the basics of designing your own Moebius scarf or wrap.
Skill level: confident beginner and up
Materials: Yarn and needles for your chosen project(s) (see either 
Treasury), and the usual knitting supplies, including a stitch

CAT BORHI to teach at Yorkshire Yarns July 11th & 12th

This will be Cat Bordhi's 1st visit to a Lakewood/Tacoma yarn shop. And it took 2 years to get her here! I know. I can't believe it either. I flew all the way to Long Beach to take a couple of her classes a few years back. It was worth eeeeeeeevery frequent flier mile!

We're excited that Cat will be teaching 2 workshops at Yorkshire Yarns on **July 11th & 12th**. (We'll be open on Sunday the 12th for this special event.)

Workshops will be 6 hours long and begin at 10am. The cost is $85 each class.

FIRST. Remember the toilet seat-birth control-smoke detector lookin'-smoke detector thingies I told about I told you about last week? Well, we're out of the toilet seats-birth control pill holder-smoke detectors thingies. I won't have more till mid April....so they tell me. I'll keep you posted.

FINALLY! We received a new shipment of SR Ketzer! I called the company and asked, "What's up w/my order?" Check this out. They said they tried to deliver it last Friday night at 7:30. WHAT?! Listen. I was home w/my family eating stale popcorn & being forced to watch "Twilight"...again. *sigh* Did I mention we're taking a trip to Forks w/three tweeners during spring break? Somebody help.

Anyhoo, this is part of what came in.

Can we talk a minute?

Times are tough for everyone. Yeah...I know. That's a "duh" statement. But I want to let you know we at Yorkie Yarns are doing what we can to help folks continue w/their yarn obsession during the economic crisis without breaking the bank. We're going to continue to bring in high quality affordable yarns. We'll continue our classes to match the demands of our patrons. And we'll keep on offering layaway. The Yorkshire Yarns layaway plan has been a huge success because folks are allowed to pay in small chunks to make sure they get the products they want/need without having to worry about them being sold out.

The one thing we can never do w/out is our gatherings of the yarnies. They're extremely fun. Folks continue to join us for knitting/crochet to get away from ...well....whatever. We're planning some new, fun things to add to those activities as well.

Now, here's a side note. Rumor has it many of you have seen our yarn mobile parked near Guitar Center on 38th. Here's the deal. My son Tyler works there and he's on commission. Yes, I know that's a shameless plug but he needs college money. Help the brother out and let him sell you what you need. Besides, he knows his stuff. Ty's the kid on the far right in the orange shirt. :-) The other 2 on the far left belong to us too but we can talk about that later.
